From aerospace to underground History of Schonstedt

For over half a century, Schonstedt has been a worldwide leader in designing and manufacturing  underground locators.

Schonstedt Headquarters

Schonstedt has been making locating easier since 1953. Our instruments aid in locating, tracing, excavating, repairing, maintaining and recovering ferrous metal objects buried up to 20 feet (6 meters) underground. Ironically, the company’s founder, Erick O. Schonstedt, designed his first instruments for use way above ground, in the aerospace industry, outfitting over 400 satellites with magnetometers, including the Hubble telescope.

In 2018, Schonstedt Instrument Company became a brand of Radiodetection Ltd. Radiodetection is a leading global developer and supplier of equipment used by utility companies and excavators to accurately locate and avoid damage to buried infrastructure networks. Radiodetection is part of SPX Corporation, an international supplier of highly engineered products and technologies, holding leadership positions in the HVAC, detection and measurement, and engineered solutions markets.
